Putin’s kiss

Putin’s kiss is an ironic or sarcastic expression used to describe the extreme measures that Russian soldiers are forced to take due to harsh conditions of service, moral pressure, or unwillingness to continue fighting. Soldiers, unwilling to take part in combat operations or desperate for war, deliberately harm themselves, for example, by shooting themselves in the mouth to avoid service or return home.

This phenomenon can be seen as a consequence of low morale, dissatisfaction with the conditions of service, or disagreement with the policies they are forced to follow. In this case, the “Putin kiss” becomes a symbol of despair.

 

The issue of suicide among Russian soldiers at war is complex and multifaceted. Military conflicts have always had a significant impact on the psychological state of soldiers, and the war waged by Russia against Ukraine is no exception.

Causes of suicide among the military

• Psychological stress and trauma: Constant stress, fear of death, visions of violence and death, and prolonged exposure to combat conditions can lead to post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD). PTSD is one of the main causes of suicide among the military.
• Lack of psychological support: Many military personnel face a lack of proper psychological support. Not being able to talk openly about their feelings and get professional help can lead to an increase in suicide.
• Social isolation: Soldiers may feel isolated from their families and friends. Feeling lonely and disconnected from civilian life can contribute to depression and suicidal thoughts.
• Negative influence of command and poor service conditions: Harsh and oppressive command, neglectful treatment of personnel, poor conditions of service, lack of food, water and other necessary resources can also lead to suicide.
